I have a 2001 R129 SL500. The problem I am getting is the damn alarm going off for no apparent reason. It must be driving the neighbours mad. Can I disable it, or is it a common problem that needs little fixing?

Alarm fault

Hi,
This is usually caused by a door light switch. If a door is not properly shut although it looks shut the interior light comes on and the voltage drop causes the alarm to go off because the alarm thinks that the door has been opened without disarming the alarm. when it goes off give each door a good closing and see if this cures it, if so. After that when it goes off again just do 1 door and when it goes off again do a different door and so on until you find the door that stops the alarm going off and change the switch in the door jam. A bit long winded but cheaper than replacing them all.

Also do make sure that there are no spiders in the sensor

Thanks for your advice, but the door is always shut properly, as I would see the interior light on when I park at night (sadly, the time the damn thing wants to go off)!

This has nothing to do with the light, its to do with the central lock switch inside the door. and it could need adjustment.

And I am serious on the spider in the sensor, just done one thread on this

Could have water in the siren or a faulty bonnet switch. Star dianosis can tell what component triggered the alarm the last 5 times. This is your quickest remedy.

Alarm fault

Hi,
The light would not stay on when you shut the door for you to notice it that's the problem. Over the years I have had this problem on both my Rovers and have just had it on the tailgate on my C220 CDI. All looks well when you close the doors and lock up the lights flash as they should to show that the car is locked and alarmed but a faulty switch at no specified time and without warning makes a circuit and the light does come on and the alarm goes off this could also be the boot switch or bonnet switch which I forgot to mention before. I have also just fixed a neighbours which was keeping ME up at night and it was his drivers door switch which is the one to start with because it gets the most use. I infact took the switch off and told him if it didn't go off again get another switch, it didn't go off again he got another switch and I fitted it and I get my sleep so don't dismiss it to easily just because it doesn't happen while you're watching.
