Welcome to the forum. I had a 129 SL320 thats the V6 version 1999 that gave around 25 in town and 33 on the motorway. Every one says that once you have driven the 500 you would never go back to the smaller engine. I have the 500 now and would not go back in town 24 ish motorway 30.

Saying that I did like my SL320.
What year are you thinking of

Its getting to the wrong time of the year for buying, many are over priced.

Hi Mick,, My garage floor is covered with interlocking tiles from Sweden they are good as any dirt falls through and vacuums out easily,,I put a 1000 gauge plastic liner underneath to stop rising damp as my garage has no damp coarse. you can buy them in the UK the bit of my garage that you can see cost about £400

Not everyone likes silver, but it is an easy option to keep clean.

Tyres are a hard thing to recomend. the steering on the 129 is very good with no pulling or following the camber.

Just study Exchange and Mart, also Top Marques for a few weeks and it should fall into place. When you want advice on one, just put up the details

Thanks I'm going (probably) to look at a 92J 300SL, but I won't be able to see it until next week. So I'm hoping to do some preparation ready for viewing. I've looked at the Honest John Car-by-Car breakdown and all it seems to say is make sure all the motors are working, especially the hood. It seems outstanding that there is nothing else noteworthy to watch for, although one of the attractions of the car is that it was built when Mercedes stood for cast iron build quality.

On cars up to 94-5 the wiring harness was the main issue, there is a good chance that this has been done.

hi,
For a 98 R with 88k i think its a bit steep 15k, but you get what you pay for and a hassal free year of motoring, for a few more grand you could probably get a newer one with less milage but that would be from a private seller..

Best advice i can offer is DONT RUSH...... took me nearly 2 years to find the right one.

there is one here:
http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/ww...fl&bodyid=0&fuelid=0&colour=&transmissionid=0

pano roof AMG kit less milage and from a trader silver 50k milage and just under 15k ( but you can bring the price down with a cash buy)

Raj

Alternative

Gents, here is a slightly left field thought for those considering an SL (129).

I've just taken delivery of a Japanese import 1991 500SL with Brabus alloys and suspension in Black (photos to follow). Its been around the world, i.e was originally a California car (hence LHD with ALL the kit) then went to Japan and now here with me. Total mileage a genuinely believable 52k, with my Merc specialists and they belive it to be right.

Its in great condition with EVERYThing working, both sets of elec seats (drivers with memory), elec mirrors and even an electric rear view mirror (had many top cars like Audi A8s etc but not seen that before). Leather is great too, both soft and hard tops in great shape and work perfectly, body beautiful and mechanically fantastic.

The best bit.........£7000 with eveything paid, registered, a new MOT, 6 months tax, various minor fixes and a 1 year warranty...... from a guy who specialises in importing Jap 4WDs near Guildford.

The only issue is with the aircon. Its the original gas and that is no longer legal, so initial cost given to me to remove illegal gas, regas and change seals on system I'm told it needs costs about £1K. Wondered if anyone can suggest if this is right or if there is a cheaper alternative.

Even if aricon too expensive to sort out, heating perfect and can live with the open feeling during the summer.

I'm actually enjoying driving a LHD, its a little different and not a problem.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Regards
Athar

Hi. I am thinking of buying a 129 300 sl , 91? Missing first 10 years history. After that all the MOTS, receipts with service with Merc Specialist. Driver's leather seat is torn. Needs doing. Says 60,000 miles. Is it worth considering? If so, what price? Its not the 24v? What should I look out for? Anyone you know can check the car out. IN London.thx
Have you got any pictures?
