Does anyone know where the OVP relay is to be located on the 300SL (129)?
I have looked in the most obvious place (the relay box that is located behind the fusebox, but it is not to be found there)

Before I rip the car apart, can you help?

Thanks
Ray

Your car does have one, early cars in the box near the bulk head, its the relay with the fuse on top, later cars its in the boot next to the battery

Malcolm,
Hello again!

The relay is definitely not in the box with other relays, behind the fusebox and in front of the main bulkhead. (I doubt that this unit would fit in there) and there is no space in any case.

I have looked in the boot area, perhaps I am missing it. When you say next to the battery, (which is in the well) is it above it, close to it?

The replacement unit that MERC sold to me has a mounting strip on it with two holes for screws, any ideas

Ray

The car has been messed around a bit in the past and since I cannot locate the OVP relay anywhere, I am wondering, and excuse my ignorance if this is stupid, but would the car run without the relay? Could the relay simply be left out?

Since I cannot find the relay anywher, and Mercedes are no help at all, is this feasible?

Thanks,
Ray

Malcolm,
Thanks for the diagrams.

I have to admit that I am still lost. I have looked everywhere under the bonnet but I still cannot find the old relay.

What is clearer, is that looking in the relay/fusebox is looking in the wrong place, since the view of this area, gleaned from the Russian site, places the relay nowhere near fuse area.

Any ideas?

Regards,
Ray

The one in the picture has the metal strip, so does your new one, I do believe that it fits onto the bulkhead (screws)

Do a search here "OVP 129

Hi Ray,

May be it is a good idea to tell the member what's wrong with your car and may be your case dosn't related to the OVP Relay at all !

I have the same experience weeks ago, I bought the OVP Relay but there is none in my car and the problem with my car didn't related to the OVP Relay at all.

Thanks,

The problem is a flickering ABS light at startup and very occasionally during a run. The light is NEVER on for more than 20/30 seconds and seems to be influenced by differing draws on current.

Mercedes looked up my vehicle reg and sold me this part, but perhaps you are right. Can I get by without this relay. If the car does not have the OVP then I am inclined to think that it is an alternator issue. Any thoughts?

All SLs had one from new, the idea is to protect the ABS module. The ABS runs from the engine not the battery, any low voltage at the start triggers it on

I have almost the same experience before, when I turn the right or left turn signal, my ABS warning lights can come all the time and I found that in my case, I have a problem with the brake-light switch, as these two functions are wired through it. You can perform a simple test to see whether you are having the same problem:

1) Start the engine with your foot on the brake.
2) If the ABS goes out when you release the brake but then comes back on,

Then It is just the brake light switch that is faulty.

All you have to do is to replace the switch.

These are information from some members in other forum and I am sure that they don’t mind that I borrow their instruction to try to help all of us !
