So I recently needed to have a new battery as I'd left the car for too long over winter. Once the new battery was fitted the car starts and drive fine; the windows work (and I've reset them) but the hood and rollover bar lights stay on and the hardtop will not release. Any ideas?

Sadly its not uncommon for the roof module to self destruct if you change a battery. It seems particularly susceptible.
You need to get codes read I would think.

Perhaps lowering then raising the roof manually might operated or “unstick” any misbehaving microswitch’s.

Push the roll bar up button and if it raises hold the button in until you hear a click. That may do it..

You can also unlock/remove the hardtop manually using the MB tool in the tool kit and following the instructions in owners manual. The tool is basically an allen key....

6mm Allen key at front, very thin 13mm spanner at rear.

Also, are you aware you have 10 seconds from ignition on in which to operate the roof switch to remove the hardtop?

Well that was a fun 40 minutes. We managed to release the hardtop and then, with a lot of swearing and grunting, release the soft top, raise it and lock it in position. However the soft top and roll bar lights are still on and pressing either (within and without of the 10 seconds the ignition was switched on) produced nothing; no sounds and no movement. So it looks like it will have to go to a main dealer, probably at great expense, to be told I need something very expensive.

So, in the hope that it would help others, I will let you know what the outcome was.

I purchased an iCarSoft MB V3.0 and interrogated the car. It pointed to switch S83/1 which is a microswitch on the roll bar. Unfortunately I then ran out of time as I had to fly to Italy but dropped it off to my Indy who checked it through and found a broken wire leading to that switch. Repaired the break and all is now working fine.

The iCarSoft is an excellent piece of kit; just make sure you buy the 38 to 16 pin adaptor for older cars.
