Could someone help me please?
Had some battery problems last year and since then there is an intermittent problem with the windows opening. This is both windows, sometimes they work sometimes (getting worse) they don't.
Am I right in assuming that if the windows do not work then the roof will not operate as well?

Yes, the roof will not operate until it senses the windows are open. I blew the fuse for the window motor on mine and it disabled the roof as well. Changed the fuse and all was well again.

Sorry, I've no suggestions for your window problem, obviously not a fuse or it wouldn't be intermittent.

The windows need to be educated . Press the window switch on both windows down when window is fully lowered hold the switch down for a further 30 secs then repeat in the fully up position this will educate the system and all should be well .Low battery voltage has caused your problem .

Thank you Quicksilver, very much appreciated. The windows are now working and I have taken the hardtop off in order to appreciate this burst of sunshine.

Mines coming off Saturday as its a 2 person job and nobody to give me a hand till then. Glad you got your problem solved . Lots of things on a R129 are interlinked electrically and the one thing it doesn't like is low battery voltage , it can cause allsorts of frightening problems (visions of pound notes in vast amounts escaping from your wallet) but happily most of them are easily solved .

Giving advice is very hard on the 129, owing to the variations in how they work, early cars the doors must be open I believe, or the windows and roll bar lowered, where as later cars do this automatically

I responded too quickly. Yesterday everything worked fine, but this morning the windows refused to work.
The resetting of the windows is a bit hard when they are not working. Is there a relay in the circuit or do you think something is still wrong in the programming cycle? The car has been a bit hard to start lately. Do you think that this may be dropping the voltage and messing up the programming?
You are right about the difficulty (and frustration)!

Are you doing this with the engine running cause it don't half cane the battery if its not ? It sounds as if you have a battery drain . Make sure the battery's fully charged then disconnect the earth and leave over night just to see that the battery is holding a charge , if ok reconnect the earth and leave overnight again to see what happens . If the battery is discharged then you have something that is draining the battery and will need further investigation . The fact that your windows worked ok after resetting them when the battery had a good charge would suggest that you have drain problem .

In your fuse box you have a comfort control relay 116

You have 152

Your fault sounds like a bad contact, or low voltage, the becker CD changer is the only known source of a drain.

I cheap meter only cost £4 to measure the battery

Funny you should say that Malcom about the Becker CD Changer I never had a problem untill I installed a Becker system (brand new) and every now and again I get a flat battery ? usually if you dont turn the radio off before the ignition , and I also saw some mention of it on the WIS programme for the R129 .It will go flat over night even if the battery is fully charged after a long run and other times it will be ok for months untill I forget to turn the radio off before the igntion .

Thank you for the ideas of what could be wrong. I do not have a Becker changer but I do have a TOAD alarm which I suspected as part of the cause of my battery going flat. I will do as you have suggested and check the battery drain and the relays. This battery is about 3 months old and cranks well. This morning the windows are working again!

The cause of low voltage/flat battery is clearly worthy of identification and fixing.

A flat battery did not upset my window or roof settings. I was unable to use the car for about 6 weeks over Christmas 2 years ago. Battery was flat when I went back to it. I jump started it and took the car for a run. No problems since and no effect on window or roof actions.

As for QS, I do raise/lower the roof with the engine ticking over, as I think it is kinder.

Just to put closure (I hope) on this. No problems for about a week since I have been driving the car on a regular basis. Thanks to all of you.
