r129 windscreen wiper working on it's own !

Hi
just been out in my '95 SL320, when i started the car the windscreen wiper started to inch it's way across the screen, despite being in the off position!
When i turned it to positions 1,11 and 111 it seemed to work fine (increased speed etc), however when i turned it to off it still works intermitantly perhaps even minutes between sweeps, but always starting off in jerky movements?

1st step, prise the end off the stalk and clean the switch contacts inside.

Stumpy has it in 1 squirt some switch cleaner down it
