Hi Guys,

I've been experiencing a few electrical (?) problems lately - and wondered if anyone could provide some help.

The wiper on my 92 SL500 has developed a problem whereby it stops working completely intermittently. When this happens I can't also flash the lights of the car by pulling back on the control stalk that operates the wiper and the full beam/flash headlights. At random this then comes back on. Also, the roll bar light keeps flashing on and off. I have also had the ABS light coming on when driving above about 50mph on the motorway - it stays on but if I restart the car it clears, only to come back on later.

Is the wiper/flash lights issue to do with the control stalk? Relay? Or something more serious like the wiring loom? I've had a look at the forum for ideas on all of these issues but wondered if they are all related. I am also worried that it may be a wiring loom issue as apparently the early SL (R129) suffered from this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if u can get the wipers working by playing with the stalk then that would be the main suspect

not sure bout the roll bar but i think theres a fuse box in the boot with the ceramic type fuses which corrode slightly and give problems, think the system is also linked 2 the abs system for a vehicle speed signal so it would be worth sorting the abs problem first

the abs problem would need the fault codes read 2 make a proper diagnosis but it sounds like uv got a sensor or pickup problem any bosch agent with a kts scanner will be able 2 do this 4 u

strange faults

This is a common fault on 1992 cars. First thing go to a Radio or TV service shop and get a tube of Electrlube, not aerosol. Take out the fuses one by one look close for any burning or pitmarks, put a drop of Electrlube oil onto the contacts, put the fuse back the opposite way round. you should also check that the fuses are of the original type (the cheap packets from the far east have under sized blades and make the fault worse. do not forget the fuses behind a panel over the battery in the boot. other reasons are poor grounding, check earth straps and the 5 point multi earth under dash and any in the boot.
All of your faults should be down to one common problem and I doubt that there is anything wrong with switches etc.
To try and find the fault, turn the key to 2 turn on wipers and wriggle the fuses, with luck you will find where the fault is.With luck I will have some more info in a few days.
DO NOT USE WD40.

I've just had similar - No wipe/wash or headlamp flash. Indicators left flashes for left or right but stops if wash/wipe or flash tried. Traced to a faulty ignition swith (high resisteance contact). To test for this check the voltage on fuse 12 mine was about 6v with indicators on down to 0v whwn wash / wipe or flashs operated- I think fuse 14/15 same proving its not a bad fuse contact.
I dismantled the ignition swith & repaired it by adjusting contacts - hope it lasts.

I've just recently posted my experience on the thread "Ignition Fault?", which is almost exactly similar to these. It turned out to be a faulty ignition switch. (earth fault)

Replacement a bit costly I'm afraid, some £300+

I do notice that the last posting was a while ago so you all may have sorted your problems?

Any feedback??

regards dougC................

This is a very good example of where a car was built around 124 components, more and more electrics and electronics added to the point where its all running at max current rating and beyond, we are the ones to pick up the bill, poor design, this makes something like 30 that I have heard of in the last month. to my knowledge a 124 ignition switch in a 124 never gives problems (Bolide will know).

I would concur with that TV 'cos I also have a 1989 230TE which has covered over 250.000 miles, 200,000 in my hands, and I have never had such problems I have with the SL.

By the way, I can't reply to your email, Daemon keeps returing it I'm afraid... how do I contact?

best regards dougC..................
