Hi Folks

Need help please on 1999 280 SL.

Taken car to local garage who have been pretty good in the past but struggling to solve problem without proper wiring digram or the card that is meant to be in the fusebox.

I am just outside Great yarmouth in Norfolk.

Any info/suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

I had similar problems with my 99 SL.. Turned out to be the ignition switch, about £90 from MB. Swapped the insides over, just unclips and problem sorted..

Hi

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Bearing in mind that I know diddly squat about car mechanics can you just enlarge upon that and explain to me why that should be the cause. I need to get back to the mechanic and explain to him. Why does it effect just those and not the electric windows for example. The hazard lights also work which is a puzzle!

Many thanks

Rob

Hazards operate independently of the ignition switch so no surprise there.
From memory electric windows will operate when a door opens independent of the ignition.

I am more than happy to tell the garage to give it a go. This site has always been a wonderful help to me over the many years I have had the car.

I just wondered if you could explain in words of one syllable how the faulty ignition switch is causing the problem?

Thanks again.

There are a couple of heavy duty contacts within. These supply voltage to quite a few circuits..

129545 0504 is for the contact / switch. This is inside the tube attached to the key bezel.

Changed it on my car to correct an intermittent no-crank condition. Good call on the part number, there were a number of variations of switch, with varying numbers of pins.

Well, just check all the fuses in the fuse box anyway, first, if any are blown or look funny, let us know which (and replace them). I'm pretty sure you can find the label on the internet somewhere by the way. Also check if any bulbs are blown and replace.

Thanks for all the interest.

The good news is that the problem has been solved with the replacement ignition switch. The not so good news is that the local garage charged me £160+VAT for the switch and £180 for the labour! Did not really have a benchmark price to complain and had found them pretty cheap in the past so let it go on this occasion. Grateful it is all working again!

Just noticed that this morning that the roll bar is slightly up from where it should be, maybe 10-15 degrees from the horizontal so a couple of inches. Not sure when that happened but assume it is something to do with the electrics problem.

How do I fix that please? I still have the winter hardtop on whether that makes any difference or not.

Raise the roll bar with the switch and keep the switch pressed until you hear a “click”, it should then be possible to lower it fully using the switch
