All these threads about changing ATF even though the boxes are supposed to be sealed for life has got me thinking that maybe I should consider changing the oil in my SLK. It's done 85k miles and there's no evidence in the paperwork that it's ever been changed.

I can't say if the box is showing symptoms of impending problems but the gear changes do feel a little clunky at times, especially compared to those in the Jeep but I guess that's to be expected.

My question is is worth doing an ATF change and if I do, can I get a new locking clip for the dipstick tube from the dealer or will they not sell them to Joe public?

I've got a couple of days off work now and have access to a 4 post vehicle lift so thought that I might get the car up in the air and have a good look over the underside.

Everyone says that they get much smoother changes, there is a link on this site in the DIY, also here

Do not forget that you can undo a cooler pipe, spin the engine for a few sec to drain the converter

I am considering changing mine, on the SLK and my C class.
What I want to know is, if I drain it carefully, including the converter, and measure what I take out, could I then re-fill it with the same exact amount? or is there a reason why this would not work??

I guess you could but doing that assumes that the level was correct before you drained it. I think the level should be checked properly after the change seeing as these gearboxes seem to be susceptible to correct oil level/quality etc.

Yes, that is what I was thinking, change it myself, and get MB to check the level after.
