Right,

I asked this a while back in an idle way, but now that the R170 has been wrecked (black & red interior too! :() by someone attempting something strange, we're wondering whether to get a direct replacement, a second hand R171 (probably a 280) or a second hand SL (350 likely). We have a Discovery for general use, so this will be a fun car.

I think the SL is the best looking car on the road, though the SLK does have a sort of 'chuck it around the windy roads' appeal and the purchase price won't be a decider, so I'm after any general comments. I know that it is a big question, but any opinions from people?

Ta!

Just personal taste but I prefer the SL. But in my case I prefer the 129 styling to the later versions

We tried an SLK but "she who must be obeyed" found it a bit claustrophobic.

Given your predicament, I would suggest the SL - a late model 129 (there are lots of good examples on the market, including a number of the "Silver Arrows" special edition). The 500 has plenty power and does not suffer greatly on economy - to sustain the same speeds the smaller engines probably use as much fuel. See posts by "television" on his recent holiday.

The 129 has the benefit of the folding soft top, so good luggae space for touring, which I am sure you will want to do. With the top down and wind deflector in place the rear "seat" provides extra luggage capacity which is also pretty secure.

All of these are well equipped - in the later ones, equipment levels start at lavish and work up.

A nice problem to have, and that is what I would do. :-D:wink:

I bet you can't guess which of the three choices I prefer.

The 230 is much quieter to drive, and far less wind blowing with the top down, I liked my 129 but I like the 230 much better, though they are more expensive to own

They're repairing the SLK.

Can anybody point me in the direction of where I can make an estimate of the potential loss in value at resale now that it is being repaired rather thamn written off? (dimution) - web searches aren't throwing anything up.

Am claiming this as a loss, plus inconvenience (if I can establish the value of that!) and possibly also loss of use of the car. Any pointers greatfully received!!!! Yes - I am annoyed with the **** that crashed into me.

I have also asked for an electronic alignment check (front wheel was battered) else I won't accept the car - am I just looking for differences L to R etc or is there some subtletly in the report?

cheers! (and it's the sunniest part of the year too......:()
