R171 SLK Rear Sub Frame - Dealer "good wil" fix.

Hi All,

A few members have reported that after taking their car into the dealer for checks, they have been replacing the rear sub frame for free. If there is no repair you are changed for the inspection...
Anyone else had this experience?

Mine failed it's MOT (NCT in Ireland) so I took it to the main dealer, they inspected it and sent a report to MB HQ who approved the replacement FOC.

Its generally the way irrespective of subframe or not for known faults where goodwill involved.
The dealers have to investigate, send a report to MB, etc which takes time.
Its a win win, If MB say yes its the subframe we will replace FOC, no diags fee, why would a customer say no dont repair (pay the fee and possibly pay another garage to repair).
Its goodwill so MB more likely to help you if you have kept car in network.

Hi which dealer did you go to and did you need any specific service history, i just bought a 2005 Slk 200 and took it in to the local mechanic and he said the subframe has a lot of corrosion, it will not pass nct..

Having just bought the car goes against any claim unfortunately. MB generally take the view that it was bought with the issue and the new owner is looking for betterment

Hi and thank you, surely the anti corrosion warranty should go with the vehicle and not the owner.

It does and it is a bit of a get out clause for MB, but I get it in some ways as Blobcat says. If it's that bad I'd be taking it back and getting a refund.

It is, although there's more than one second hand car dealer that's bought an older Mercedes and tried to get MB to repair it so they can then sell it again for a tidy profit. The previous owner should have had it dealt with, although they might not have known about the issue or that Mercedes could have possibly fixed it for them
