Hi,

I'm a newbie here. I recently purchased a 2004 SL350. It's a really clean, well documented car but had a few small jobs needing done.

I have been reading a lot of advice from this forum which is greatly appreciated. I have been working my way through the car (oil, air, plugs, rocker gasket, discs pads etc) but the boot is baffling me.

When I bought the car the boot did not soft close however the central locking and lumbar are all working. The boot would only open by key. I removed the boot lid carpet and removed the actuator which had already been epoxyed. I decided to purchase a new actuator which has arrived. I installed the actuator and the boot now soft closes but does not open without the key.

When I removed the actuator someone prior had cut the 2 wire connector, that connects to the actuator, and rejoined them. I wonder if the wires need reversed. Can anyone tell what this connection does and the order for the wires in the connector.

What length should the bar connecting the actuator to the mechanical lock be? I'm trying to rule out anything that has possibly been touched in the past. Fuses have been checked and are intact.

When I press the unlock button I can hear the pump but the lock does not pop open.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks. Mark

I'd say that there is a chance the "new" actuator is leaking. If it was a used one off eBay this is unfortunately all too likely. If you listen closely you may be able to hear it hissing as the vacuum escapes. New ones from MB are around £400, hence why most people use the epoxy method.

It took me quite a bit of trial and error to seal the actuator completely, your car's previous owner may have given up. It is worth persevering.

Thanks for the reply. I purchased a new actuator for MB. The actuator is soft closing just not unlocking. I plugged in my icarsoft and got the following:

B1446-002: Component Y65/3 (CL remote trunk lid release valve): Short circuit to ground or open circuit.

Sounds as though you've solved it then- a wiring fault. I can't see any reason why the wiring to the actuator was previously cut, the cobbled together connection is where I'd look first. It would suggest that this problem has occurred before.

Broken wires are common, usually in the area of the complicated boot hinge

Thanks for the replies, I've stripped the loom back to the top of the hinge. No breaks so far, I'll finish the search tomorrow.

Update, I purchased a complete boot lid wiring loom off eBay. I check the continuity of the cables and fitted the loom. My boot is still not opening and I am still getting the error code:

B1446-002: Component Y65/3 (CL remote trunk lid release valve): Short circuit to ground or open circuit.

has anyone ideas? I'm completely baffled.

It closes ok? Could it be the microswitch in the handle you squeeze to open the boot?
Does it open ok from the switch in the driver’s door?

It closes fine, the soft close kicks in as it should. It just won't open when I pull the boot release handle, button inside the car or on the key.The boot will only open with the key in the lock.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll remove the handle in the morning and clean it with contact cleaner.

No, I don’t think it’s that. If it isn’t working from any of the buttons it’s a more centralised fault. Please try removing the electrical plugs from your PSE unit, waiting a couple of minutes and then refit them. The unit will switch off certain lines if they leak and it times out. It can be reset with Star, but unplugging for a couple of minutes will reset it too. Worth a go

Also do go back to the lock unit and check you have got all the electrical plugs fitted, just in case. In your first post you mentioned one connection, but there are more than one, I’m sure

Just to update incase anyone has the problem. After installing a new boot actuator and lid wiring loom, with no success, I purchased a pse pump. Success! my boot unlocks again and the roof now works ( boot separator message before).

Does anyone have a picture of the wiring loom going around the driverside flap? My flap is catching the rubber right angle of the loom. I photographed everything else when I removed it.

Many thanks for all the assistance!!

Mark
