So, does the consumer battery help the starter battery if the starter battery is low?

The consumer battery always goes flat first, as it has all the current drains on it. The starter battery never gets low, as long as it is good condition, as there is no drain on it.

So in 10 years of ownership my starter battery never lost charge, or failed to start the car. I did replace it as a precaution when it was 15 years old.

+1 on charging on rear only.

My understanding is that you only need to charge the rear battery, because it's connected to the front in some way and will maintain that also.

Friend kept his R230 500 rear battery on a conditioner, very rarely used it, but never had any starting issues (or consumer offline warnings)

Apparently these are unavailable from MB - can anyone recommend a good source for a replacement or someone who offers a good repair service?

All parts have different part numbers for a reason, although some can be used as they are interchangeable. I have used 3 different part numbered products on the same car without issue.
I'm sure one of the parts or specialists on here can give you a better idea.

1045 will be the updated version of 0945 and is very likely a direct replacement.

Thank you, that's good to know. I believe I have found one - should be here on Tuesday.

Do anyone have experience or recommendations for the reconditioning these units. It would seem to be sensible to get the original repaired in case this happens again. They aren't going to get any easier to find.
