Hi guys,

So I have the following problem with R230.

The boot is very heavy to open and must be opened to the very top or it will fall down. In short the hydraulic rams/pistons have failed.

I don't have the power close boot, but there is a fob/cabin button to open the boot. Should these buttons pop the trunk to fully open if the hydraulics were fully functioning?

Does anybody have the part numbers for these rams as I can't seem to find them in EPC.

Thanks a lot

I think they just pop it open but don't lift it up - the lid is a heavy beast (as you know)
I'd give MB Grangemouth a call and ask them for prices etc.

The struts are expensive from MB but ebay has lots of cheaper alternatives. Having said that I bought mine from MB.

The button is just for unlocking.

I see you can buy some pretty cheap off brand parts.

I think I am going to go the cheapo route. Mainly because the boot doesn't see an awful amount of action and the struts aren't even used for the roof opening/closing process.

Even with 2 new struts from MB you still have to lift the boot up. What they do, is keep it up so it doesn't fall on your head. A useful feature IMHO. Even the MB ones only last a few years before the sagging returns, maybe 5 at most.

Well that's rather annoying isn't it that they only last a few years.

So it seems there is only marginal benefit to replacing them then.

I've just done mine with MB parts. £88 for the 2 struts. When you press the door button the boot will unlatch and rise about 6 inches. Boot lid is much easier to lift and a little harder to close the last 6 inches.

Worth doing and I would hope that MB parts last a bit longer than eBay junk at £14 for 2.

Thanks for that insight. I would replace for that kind of operation.

I have replaced my R230 boot lid struts twice in the last ten years, both times with MB struts. The first set raised the boot slightly, for a short period. The second set didn't raise the lid at all, but they did stop it dropping. It's either replace them or carry a broom handle to use as a prop, and that didn't feel very "premium".

I think I can live with a replacement ever 5 years. I can't imagine it being an awful job.

It's easy enough to do, just make sure the lid does not close on you, it's very heavy

I have bought £14 ones of ebay and they are still working perfectly for the last 4 years.
The only difference after reading some of this thread is if I use the door button to release the boot, it clicks open, but by the time I get to the boot lid it have self closed again  Then I either have to use the boot latch or the key fob, but now tend to use the boot latch to keep it working as they seize up :)

They’ve probably leaked if they’re not holding it off the latch

They never did even just after fitting them Rus, I guess that's the price you pay for aftermarket goods.....darn copyright act
