Hi all, new member here. Just picked up an SL55 and and despite it needing a bit of (lot of) work and TLC I’m excited to get going!

First question is about Cats, I know the overall exhaust systems themselves have some differences between the r230 models but are the actual cats the same (primary and secondary?)

For example did they just have a big pile of the same OEM primary cats at the factory and whether it was a 350, 500 or 55 they just built the required exhaust using a single make of OEM cat

Thanks!

Not 100% sure but I think the cats are the same as the 500's however saying that I think the exhaust diameter is bigger on the SL55 so you might run into issues with the sizes?
Hello and welcome by the way

No, but that would be a great story to have!!

Mine was impeccably maintained (at seemingly no expense spared) in the MB dealer network up until about 2016 then fell off the radar a bit. Involved in an accident in 2020 and is now CatN. Then sat around for a bit until i picked it up.

I'm going in with eyes wide open. I'm not too bad on the spanners (I build and race Clio 182s) so will be attempting as much work myself as I can get away with. It's also not my only weekend car so i'm happy to work my way through the problems methodically without pressure to get it back on the road.

This forum was such a goldmine of info (and still is) so massive thank you to all of you for anything you have written about the R230 and the SL55 in particular!

Maybe i should start a thread on the car? Maybe useful for people to see warts and all what the journey looks like?

I've installed internal brake lines on my racecar but i've not had experience with such a complex setup as the SL so I would say basic knowledge but very keen to learn!

@Conor will no doubt be interested in talking to you about Clio's

R230's are well represented on the forum so you'll get some decent advice, and mine...;)

Welcome to the world of AMG ownership, congratulations on the car, from an ex-SL55 owner, as you can probably tell by my user name.

Lovely car, should be an interesting project.

Primary and secondary cats are different.
Secondary cats can be removed from a 55k and replaced with a x-pipe with no change to the emissions at MOT time.
The 350/500/55 all have different diameter pipework so if you need primary cats you'll need the correct ones. (The left and right bank are different too.)
If you find OEM hard to obtain, you can fit 200cell sports cats with SL55 fitment.
