Hi all,

I need to change the rocker gaskets on my SL500. Happy enough to do the job but just a couple of questions:

Firstly, what torque do I need to put on the bolts when reinstalling the covers? and secondly, I've noticed that on the left (with oil filler) rocker cover there's a separate piece that looks like it's got its own small gasket - anyone got a part number for that one?
Also, is it worth using gasket sealing compound with the new gaskets - never used it before, never had a rocker gasket leak after changing it so wondering what's the point? The way I see it is if torqued down correctly the gasket should do the job.

I used a Haynes manual recently when I did my Clk rocker gasket , aside from the 10nm for the bolts , there was a complex picture in Haynes on the order the bolts needed tightening in ...I think there was 20 of them ?
I didn't use any compund with the rubber gaskets , I think that's a no no .

Definitely do not use silicon sealant.
It has a nasty habit of forming beads (lumps) which then break off and circulate in the oil.
If you must use anything use a non setting compound such as hylomar blue but in general it's better to use nothing.

Thanks for those, like I said I've never used anything with the gaskets before. What was the torque on the CLK gasket, can't see the values being that far apart.

Sorry I missed that you put 10nm, I misread it and thought you'd put 10mm!!

Bolts are 10Nm if engine subtype less than 985 (I.e.113985xxx). 8Nm if above.

Yes. First 6 digits.
113 is the major type, the next 3 numbers are the sub type or variant. The rest is serial number .

There is no gasket for the breather tanks on both sides, they need to be removed and cleaned up, and re-sealed with sealant.

This must be used sparingly.

New small bolts that hold the tanks on too (new ones are steel, old are aluminium), make sure the bolt holes are cleared out too.
