Afternoon all,
door speakers on R230 SL. some of the three way chassis has bass units face outwards and some chassis the bass unit faces inwards. Google images for the evidence.

1) Does anyone know why the difference ?
2) Does anyone think it rational that a speaker faces the outer door skin rather than in to the cabin? I was surprised.

I would imagine backward mounting a speaker and bouncing the sound of another surface (door panel) would produce a hightening of the lower frequancy and a loss of higher ones. Some sound designer could probably give you chapter and verse.

^^ I did wonder if that was the case. What surprised me was that when searching for these units the photos show some with a speaker facing one way, and others facing another, and all for the R230 allegedly.

Finally sorted out my bust bass unit.
It was one of these and seems to be a reasonable match: https://monacor-webshop.de/sp-202c.html

Because it is a convertible I could not care less about the sound quality or perfect match. My home hifi does sound properly for me. If anyone else needs to replace a flappy bust bass unit, this will fit into the existing chassis and will play sound and is available as 1x rather than a pair of speakers. It cost me £25 from Wilmslow Audio.

I do not ever want to have to deal with a door card ever again.

Very interested in these speakers. How did you fit them into the original frame having removed the original speaker?

Hi Sausage, I needed to replace my speakers and checked your suggestion. I bought speakers like yours for low range but which were not as deep as yours at 80 mm instead. Your ones say the mounting depth is 86mm. Anyway after taking the unit out and putting the new speakers in, first the door card would not go on, so I trimmed that then the speaker grille could not go on as the magnet stuck out too far. Given your magnet would stick out even further how did you manage this? Rgds
