So I have the dreaded headlight flicker on the nearside headlight of my 2003 SL350, from the searches I've done they're pointing towards a failed igniter and the common consensus appears to be that I have to drop the front bumper and remove the headlight to replace it. This is despite the fact that you can tantalisingly see it through the bulb aperture, so the question is has anyone managed to replace the igniter on their R230 without removing the headlamp?

Did you ever get a reply on this or solve the problem ? I have intermittent failing headlight strike on nearside. From other work I was doing the ballast/igniter unit (both the same thing ?) are accessible from inside the wheel arch after removing the forward wheel arch liner, plus the corner underskirt (both very easy, especially compared to removing bumper). Maybe this will work for changing the unit ?
