Oh for gods sake why is it upside down. This issue is getting to me big time.
I may as well chuck this radio in the bin does anybody have any idea of an up to date cd radio unit that will just go straight in
or is that going to cause me another giant headache coz mercedes hate upgrades to their useless radios :-(

my old c class didn't have a code when it was disconnected (same unit) BUT id imagine, from experience of the old ford radios, you just repeatedly press 1 until the correct number is displayed for the first number, 2 for the second etc.

as for radios that go straight in, usually you need a permanent live feed to be added (IIRC) for radios to work correctly, and you may need a cable to get the steering wheel controls to work, if the replacement radio is compatible with them

yes it looks like the radio has been changed for sure but whats baffling is i've put the serial number off this radio into a online code search company i bought the removal keys removed radio and checked serial number put it into the website search engine and they gave me a code of 5 numbers but one of them is a digit 6 and I simply cannot fathom how to find and input 6 into the radio cos it doesn't have a number 6 on the front and the rds push button is in place of the right hand turn dial and does nothing to help me. I'm at my wits end with it. I changed the head unit in my older clk which i sold and it was a lovely panasonic. I hate this current audio 10 original anyway with a cd changer in the boot and cassette player its ugly boring and now useless but i'm told if I replace the head unit with something modern I could screw the car electronics up to a severe level of stress because its got steering wheel control and god knows what else that might flip the computer out. Honestly give me back my Ford Anglia I'm sick of this modern computer crap and when I say modern this is 2001 I'm talking about:shock::cry:

I know how you feel on this so called progress, even though I have been in this game all my life. There are other radio's . the Audio 10 CD would work perfectly in your car.

Funny thing is I hardly ever use the steering wheel buttons, as the wheel turns they can all be upside down. I always use the radio control as I always know where it is.

It is the RDS version with cassette, so about 2000 vintage.

Here's the pic I took of the serial number and yes its a becker. I'm with Malcolm regards the steering controls I really don't care about using them and the only reason I haven't changed the head unit for something more modern is because I've read somewhere that it can somehow mess with the cars computer I assume cos it won't see the so called factory fitted one but this doesn't appear to be the original head unit anyway otherwise the code I got off MB should have worked in the first place the code i got from code-it is 42261 for the serial number I put in directly from the unit I have. The 6 is the issue as I don't have the right hand control knob I have an rds push button instead
So basically assuming I get it working again but having already swapped a head unit in my previous 98 clk (no steering wheel controls) to a modern panasonic which I stupidly sold with the car and given that I hate this radio anyway I hate cd changers in the boot Can anyone tell me regardless of if i get this working is it safe to buy a modern cd radio head unit and install it in this car CLK230 2001 (with steering controls) without hassle or computer paranoia or any other potential flip out by what is essentially a big metal computer

If you fit a radio with no steering wheel controls it will not upset anything, the buttons will just do nothing.

Funny, I am the same with CD,s etc and can hardly be bothered with them.

You could think about DAB at this point in time.

thanks Malcolm
Do you have any recommendations on which makes will go in without too much hassle? As previously mentioned I put a pioneer in my older clk 98 looked great only issue i had was poor AM reception so I used to plug my iPhone in to the head unit and used a radio app to listen to 5 live mainly. I did this myself with a mate at work well when i say i did it. My mate did the switch whilst I held the tools so to speak lol!

I cannot recommend as I am out of date, many radios from Japan use an IF frequency of 455kz rather than the 465kz that has been the European frequency since the superhet was first introduced. This gives a lousy AM performance as the station tuning frequency does not divide equally into the 455kz.

Most German radios are better in this respect.
