This may sound like a stupid question, but is it okay to just leave rain sensing wipers permenantly set on (ie, the intermittent setting)?

I just wonder if the "default" setting is OFF for a reason? I can't beleive the sensors use much power...

It's absolutely fine to leave them on permanently, i.e. on setting I.

The only thing this will mean is that everytime on start-up, the wiper arm(s) will sweep the screen just once.

Can be a bit annoying - not to mention potentially damaging for the wiper rubber if screen id very dirty and dry.

yes, but remember to switch them off if you use automatic car washes.
