Rain sensing wipers - the end

Just as a reminder, the C class I bought late last year had, I was told, 'Rain Sensing Wipers', and I was instructed in their operation and use.
It being my first Mercedes, I knew about them but would not have been able to tell if they were fitted or not.
However the rain had no effect so I assumed that they were not working and requested that they were fixed.
After a few visits, phone calls and six weeks later it was agreed that the car would be put on diagnostics, the read out scrutinised and 'computer said no'.
Rain sensing wipers were not fitted but their cost on ordering new was only just over £100, so I asked about retro fitting, they said we will get back to you on that, making it seem entirely possible.
I also contacted an indie in Bristol who was very helpfull, called me back in 10 mins to say it was possible but about 5 hours labour plus new w/screen, sensor, loom etc, so EXPENSIVE.
So another call to main dealer after 3 weeks of silence, was told quite abruptly that "oh yes I remember your's was the car we tested, you do not have rain sensors and they can't be retro fitted."
By this time it was the answer I was expecting, but surely all of this could have been better dealt with by an instant check when I first brought it to the salesman's attention, even a quick call to the previous owner would have sufficed.
Then on realising the omission on extras fitted, an apology about the mistake, fine, no problem, it happens, I am an easy going guy, top my tank up, subject closed.
Instead it dragged on for 9 weeks, the initial rapport has gone and I feel as though it is all my fault, how ****** sad.
Thanks to all who read this rant, feel better now, and to think the salesman just had a customer relations course!
Still love the car though.

I totally sympathise with you, like you I was told I had rain sensing wipers and to be fair with my back ground I should have noticed it. When I found out I did not they also said sorry and they could not retro fit. Wrong, yes you can I want them! After ALOT of haggling and letters I got them retro fitted, I even offered them the work sheet on how to do it. If you do a search for whitemiss, he had them retro fitted, it's job you can do yourself if your up to it, but you will need star to activate it. So get back onto them and chip chip away, they will get sick of you before you will.
Good luck

Thanks for replying dava, yes I will do a bit more research into this, I did not even get a "sorry" though, just a statement.

I could write a half hour show for Rogue traders on the subject. It's a shame really as they do have a good product, it's just the after sales/customer care bit they fall short in.

I wonder if whitenemisis is about? and could give me a rough idea of the cost of his retro fit?
Are the sensors on an adhesive pad or actually part of the windscreen?
My screen has two sensors, one small that I assumed was a light dependent resistor for the auto h/lights.
The other larger and more reflective being the rain sensor, which apparently is not the case, or is it?

I stand to be corrected as I was going to do mine, but being a stubborn old git I dug my heels in. I believe the harness is there, you have to buy the sticky pad that you talk of and remove the interior mirror as well as the trim panel, all from memory so dont shoot the messenger. I believe the pad and parts required were under £30 but again not sure.

If you have the blue circle, then the screen could be OK, and has to be a MB screen. I know that whitenemisis had a problem with the connector on the module in the the new one came with a 4 pole plug on a 3 pole wires. He is a knowledgeable helpful guy and will give you the answer

Rain sensors

Thanks for the post and I have just been on an american SLK site and seen a very good pic of the rain sensor/blue circle, I do not have one of those fitted.
So obvious now that it is difficult to see how the mistake was made in the first place.

Hi Grandad

I'm sure you and I have corresponded on this before?

Anyway if you don't have the two independant sensors, just a single double lens version you will definately need a new screen. The lenses for the sensors are bonded to the screen

Below is a picture of the combined rain & light sensor lenses. The light sensor is the two lenses in the centre, the remaining 4 pairs are the rain sensor

From the inside;

The actual sensor, below, is relatively cheap at ~£50. You may need a new loom from the ocp to the combined sensor, have a chat with a friendly parts dealer. You could also need to change the connector at the ocp end of the loom, again its all a bit try and see. There are so many variations car to car I can't be more definitive.

If you do go for a new screen request the type for a combined rain & light sensor (shown above, this is the most recent type for our cars) The car will need to be coded for the new sensor and the sensor will need to be adapted (adjusted for sensitivity)to the screen. This is all done using STAR

Ive got rain sensors but if I hadnt I wouldnt miss them. I usually end up using the manual over-ride.
The positioning of the stalk is more disappointing. Its behind the steering wheel so you cant see it.
