Well just a rattle really, A car I'm interested in has a rattle on the top end, does anyone know what this might be? Someone mentioned a possible camshaft, or adjustment, would this cost a lot to be replaced on a Merc? Its a 1984 280CEW. I am used to old ford's and I am going to sell up my cars to try the world of Mercedes out for a change as I crave comfort instead of screamers... ha ha.

Cheers,

Alex.

Hello,

The car your interested in has what they call a 110 engine, this engine is quite noisey in operation anyway! The car that you are looking at may just require tappets adjusting, But if high mileage then you may have to have the camshafts checked!! I'm not sure of the cost involved in replacing the cams i've not had to do any! then again they did stop using this engine about the year I was born!!!!

When running right they are nice cars though!!

Good luck in your quest!!!

Be careful-it's a fine line between right and wrong, but the costs involved can be very high indeed!
I've replaced a few over the years, and it's mostly down to lubrication issues or poor/infrequent clearance setting.
If you can, find somebody who's familliar with these engines and would be prepared to look it over for you.If not,a couple of basic pointers-check down the oil filler for any build up of sludge on the internal casting(a good sign of regular oil changes with good oil),and if it sounds too quiet walk away!
Don't be put off though, this is one of the truly great Merc engines and is capable of huge mileage if looked after properly.
