My c200 99 t-reg, manual, rattles when on full lock and pulling away, it sounds like the engine is going to cut out and when the revs pick up the noise stops, any one experienced this before?

sounds like its your power steering, have you checked that the power steering fluid level is correct ?

It does sound like a power steering problem, but could you explain the rattle a little better

Sounds a perfect recipe for the belt tensioner to me.

Had a similar noise on my E240, the belt tensioner was the culprit, as per Televisions post.

;)

i think i'll stick to computers :p

All input is vital as you know Niall, its just that power steering pumps don't really rattle, I know that eric says that they do, but thats only in China.

No Malcom, Im not saying the steering pump rattles, but pressure on full lock can cause rattles. and the tensioner is only one of several that can rattle. AC compressor is another, idler wheels another, ABC another steering pump another. The list is endless.

Eric I am not going to argue all through this post, power steering has relief valves when on full lock, and a power steering pump that rattles ?. I have yet to know of a rattling compressor pump and this car does not have ABC.

Look you want the postings as complicated as possible, I like to keep them simple with things that fail on a regular basis.

Thank goodness I do not get rattled easily.

Sorry for the delay ive been away from my computer, to try and describe the rattle better would be to say it chatters, the fluid level for the steering is ok.
malcolm i think you may be correct in saying the tensioner, as i feel the steering is ok and it only chatters because putting the steering on full lock is making the revs drop down low.
Is the tensioner one complete item or is it available in parts, it looks to me from your diagram that you may be able to replace the shock absorber type part?

Thing to do is to watch the components when the steering is held on full lock.

The damper is easy to disconnect and checked to see if there is any damping left

My one does this too, never bothered me too much ;) It now has character :D

It does not take much to start it oscillating, and will only right itself once the loading changes

Thanks Malcolm, ill try to look at this as soon as possible and post back. Ive just come in from changing the rear brake pads and found the nearside caliper was seized and the metal pipe feeding this caliper has corroded through were it is held to the body with the rubber type clips! Lucky i spotted the flexi hose was wet and traced it back, looks like a pain to change.:(

So sorry to hear that, is it allowable to have correct joins in brake pipe, I mean that the flexible is a join. Brake pipe flaring tools are quite cheap, if the rest is OK. I can check for you with my MOT man

I would think correct joins would be allowed but like you say i will have to check the rest of the pipe (and the others) to see if its corroded in other places. I dont know how big the flaring tools are but the pipe looks difficult to get to. Hopefully weather permitting i will get a better look at weekend.
