My 54-plate C-class has developed a faint but rapid vibration which I'm sure is coming from the top centre of the dash (around where the front parking sensor display is). Particularly bas on rough roads and at motorway speeds. MB have had it in and checked the centre and top dash air vents but can't find anything. Any ideas on what it might be .... ??

My rear view mirror rattles sometimes, that sounds like it's the dash.

Yes, mine rattled after only a few months from new and was replaced. At the time, if you gently tapped the rear-view mirror you could hear the rattle inside. This one is unfortunately different in source. Hey ho.

Ok, the rattle on my 2004 C-class has now extended itself. All help appreciated. Facts as follows:

- rattle inside the front passenger airvent.
- vibration behind the front centre airvent near the windscreen.
- separate vibration behind drivers' instrument pod.
- high speed ride on rough motorway concrete as hard as nails at the front.
- the front suspension seems to have a black plastic thing below the spring that is very close to the top of the tyre (maybe an inch separation) - normal ?

The rattles come and go, but are always present on rougher road surfaces. Is it a suspension issue causing vibrations through into the dash, or just the dash rattling all by itself ?? Car is 3 years old with 30k on the clock. Baffled.

I can see this one has you foxed .... no replies for days.

Ok, another 500 miles under the belt, and the problem (if I can call it that) has altered. The ride from the front is quite hard and there is a very heavy rumbling noise on all motorway surfaces from the front - this also seems to cause the vibrations to come on and off at random. Front tyres still have 4-5mm tread, so I'm assuming it can't be them. Pressures fine, etc. Is this a suspension problem do we think .... ?

Rattling dash and hard ride diagnosed

After 3 days in the MB dealer, the hard ride and dash rattle were diagnosed and fixed.

It was because the front wheel bearings had gone, together with the torque arms (?), the torque arm bushes (?), and the front cross struts (?). Thankfully all of that was on warranty, but it seems a bit odd that all these should fail after just 30k miles from new. That said, I wouldn't know a torque arm if it was put in front of me.

I also had all the brake discs and pads replaced, because the fronts were 95% worn and the rears 80% worn. With an A-service and an MOT as well, the bill was a cool £1,000+.

Do brake discs and pads wear down to nothing after 30k miles .... ? I am gloriously ignorant on the subject and ask out of interest.
