Im trying to track down a noise on my E270cdi. Easiest explanation is that it sounds like an angry sewing machine under load.

I thought it may be hydraulic lifters and have added some Forte Top End treatment but seems not to have made any difference. I have not changed the oil and filter yet but will be doing that soon.

The sound is like a lazy lifter but if i bring the revs up slowly or hold it at a rev range its is not that bad if at all. Increasing the revs slowly it seems ok so made me think its not bottom end. If i accelerate hard (foot to the floor) then it is worst (proper angry sewing machine).

I have checked the injectors for leaks and have replaced the copper washers on two that were leaking so ok there. the previous owner said he had replaced two injectors. I have checked the numbers on them and all seem to be the same A6480700187 with a 4 in a circle.

Thought maybe timing chain noise or fault with the injectors (diesel knock) tho guessing really.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated

That's probably the chain IMO, how many miles?

Thanks for the help. It's done 150k
I thought the chains on these were not an issue

Doe's it have Stop/Start ? if it doe's the "Rattle" will more than likely be the timing chain, especially at that mileage.

Don't think it does have stop / start.

Can the chain be checked or is it worth changing the tensioner

OM647 engine is about as reliable as they come, very unlikely to be the chain. As has been mentioned upload a video if you can of the noise, it may help us hearing it.
Not sure if was mentioned but is this only when under load and not when reving in neutral?

My money would be on injectors, had one replaced on old S class diesel and always had a ticking noise from the engine, although it quietened over time, was told it may have needed injector coding but never got around to sorting isue.

You can hear at certain rpms in neutral. Mostly at higher revs. It's most noticsl if I floor the accelerator when driving.

Will try to record a video and post

Hopefully I have managed to sort a video of the engine at tick-over. In it you hear the tapping which gets worse with hard acceleration

No sure I just bought the car a few months ago
Failed engine and gearbox mounts can putt things out of line creating additional wear on some components, which could be then giving you the sounds your hearing. Easy to check them if you get underneath or on a lift

Thanks for the reply. The airbox isn't moving its vibrating but for some reason i think it interacts with the frame rate and makes it look like its moving

Couldn’t play the video until now but that vibration is certainly the engine mounts shot

I second that especially if two were change previous, I would get the other two injectors tested if nothing obvious shows up
