I recently bought a roof box from the MBOA classifieds. It was supplied by Mercedes along with C class roof bars to the previous owner five years ago and never used.
I've kept it on for the last week or so partly because I was too lazy to take it off and store it and partly to see how it coped with a 240 mile motorway blast today (London-Birmingham-London).
Anyway, it has developed a metallic rattle which seems to come from the area where it attaches to the roof bars. It rattles on rough roads and when I close the doors or just bang the side of the box lighly. I suspect it may be the horizontal metal "mounting blades" on the underside of the box that slot into the roof bars themselves.
I have tighted up the knurled knobs inside the box that tension the mountings and checked the roof bars themeselves and they seem OK.
I am going to loosen off one of the roof bars and pull it away from the other to see if a bit of tension stops it. If that doesn't I'll remove the box and run around with the roof bars only for a day to make sure the problem isn't with them.
In the meantime has anyone else used Merc roof boxes and experienced this issue? Any ideas gratefully received.
PS the motorway run was fine - bit more wind noise and a few less mpg. The C43 still pulled like a train though
