I have placed several posts regarding a really annoying rattle from the front (2000 model E200 estate) and most folk pointed to replacing bushes, which I did but the rattling was still there.
I found the problem the other day when I was washing the car. I was brushing the bonnet and putting pressure on the brush over the bonnet area just near the passenger side headlight I hear that annoying sound. I started pushing different areas of the bonnet and inspected the gas lifters and hinges etc.
I did a slight adjustment to increase the height of the bonnet and sprayed the gas lifter clamps that sit on the arms / rods and the rattle has now gone.
Not sure if the adjustment or lube sorted it but it has finally gone.
One of those really irritating rattles that threw us all off track.
