Noticed recently that sort of ticking noise you get when you have a stone or a nails stuck in your tyre. Checked the tyres they were fine. noise still there.

Initially thought it was coming from front so took wheel off, checked caliper, pads etc. noise still there

Noticed the noise was more metallic and was not always present but when it was it would do it even at creep speed. I let the car creep with the door open and realised it was coming from the rear. Jacked car up spun wheel nothing - drove car and there it was again.

I have now noticed that the noise, which seems to be one noise per rotation of the rear drivers side wheel, gets much louder if I take a left hand bend at speed, and then disappears in a right hand bend. In this condition, when it is loud, it sounds like something contacting the disc or the disc shield.

any ideas ???? disc, pads, shoes, bearing ?????

It is possible that it is the rear springs that hold the handbrake shoes in position that is the problem...they are very close to the wheel studs.....Remove the rear wheel and rotate the hub to see if the noise is still there......

Put a coupe of block under the front wheels and jack up the rear wheel, start the car and put it in drive. The wheel should rotate and you will be able to trace the noise easier. You can take the wheel off and do this as well.

pad spring clips

Rear pad tensioner clips or pins corroded. Or wrong size of wheel bolts.

Could be several things ie.

* rear calipers partly sticking on, which is common

* rear bearing worn out and allowing excess axial play at the rear

* drive shaft universal joint . This is my choice because of the ticking sound which is typical of a "Constant Velocity joint" starting to break up.

Regards

Could be the wheel bolts, try taking one out at a time to see if it goes away, put it back before doing the next.
Also I have heard tyres making odd rotational noises if the internal cords are damaged, this would go away when jacked up and rotated.
Nicky, how would you like a job as a tech?

Nicky

Ten out of ten, go to the top of the class and a gold star for good measure !!!!!!!!

Checked the wheel studs last night and guess what ?? ........seems that one of them ever so slightly longer than the others. At the end of the bolt there was also evidence that it has been coming into contact with something. Changed the stud and hey presto, no noise

thanks Nicky

All

Read somewhere, that the result of a survey concluded "up to 35% of all faults on cars were self induced by mechanic/owner" ie. people that really did not know what they were doing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
