Howdy all!

On my 1990 560SEL, the back end has always been really bouncy. She has hydraulic suspension in the rear, but despite always having full fluid it bounces alot in the rear when going over a bump. Ive been told that replacing the rear accumulators can remedy this problem. How hard a job is this to do? or is it somthing i would have to go directly to MB for?

Love this car, putting money into her isnt a problem.

Rear accumulators, or spheres, have a diaphram in them which separates the oil from a gas. This gives it a dampening effect. If the diaphram splits, then the oil fills the sphere & lessens the effect, ending up with a bumpy ride, which could well be your problem. This is not a dealer only job. Any good garage should be able to tackle it. I would, however, suggest you coat the pipes & fixings with WD40 for a few days before hand though, as they will be rusty & if a metal pipe breaks, it will only add to you problems.

Does that not cause a harsh ride (as the suspension is effectively hydraulically locked) as opposed to a bouncy ride?

I don't know anything about self-levelling suspension, but I know a wee bit about hydraulics. The only thing I can think of that would cause this is low gas in the accumulators. Can they be topped up?

Rear accumulators

This is my first post, so sorry if I'm covering old ground or have posted in the wrong spot.

I've been looking around the forum for a "how to" and required parts list to replace the rear accumulators on my 1989 300SE. It's for my mechanic who's very good, but just not particularly experienced with mercs. There's only about 3 older MBs running around in this area, and the nearest MB specialist/dealer is 90kms away.

I've posted this on the end of this thread, as it's as close as I could find to what I'm after. If anyone could help, I'd be obliged.
