Hi
My W169 rear splash plates are starting to hole with corrosion , to replace these I believe I need to remove the rear hub , using a slide hammer puller . My question do they work or will I end up trying to bash them out ? And if the puller works do the bearings require replacement. I would be doing this job on the drive . Am I better of leaving for the garage . The job in its simplest sense looks easy enough but as I am finding with any job on this car that's not the case .

Thanks

I found a crafty method online which I adapted to do Mrs D's CLK backplates without pulling the hub and it was a total success. I think I wrote it up on here, I'll look.

Hi thanks, but I am fairly sure it's not like that , the 4 bolts that hold the hub on also hold the plate on . In a massive stroke of luck that's is lol .

Sure. Just cut the backplate with an angle grinder before fitting, then mig it back up and paint it afterwards. My CL500 was the same.

The plate sits behind the hub bolts so is on the outside, do mean weld the plate to the subfame ? . It is not possible to cut and fit as some can be done .

To correct myself the back plate is sandwiched between the subframe and hub , held in position by the hub nuts .

No. You cut the plate itself, but equally for your car I may be talking rubbish.

Ahh OK if yours is 4 bolts to remove the wheel bearing assy as a whole that's loads easier. Brake pads, caliper and carrier off. Probably pull out the ABS sensor. Then unbolt whole assy... remove disc shield and replace. Bolt everything back.

Don't scare him... its all bolts, bit of easing fluid and a light tap at most.

I have worked on many cars for over 40 years , I have angle grinders, impact wrench etc . Just seams a bit silly to have to remove the hub really by design.

When my Indy did mine last time they had a real issue getting the hub off one side, took him three hours to eventually get it all freed up with enough penetrating fluid to sink a small ship, luckily no sheared bolts otherwise that would have been another couple of hours work for them

Thanks , it's a simple job really , I had it stripped down yesterday to have a look , reaching the springs can be challenging . I should like to tackle the job myself however it's rather right access and it's just on the drive . I may leave to a garage on this occasion . Which is slightly annoying as if straight forward it's a hour job Really .

Thanks again
