Just bought my first Merc.. a 1995 C180..lovely little bus to drive. My exterior light warning lamp has been on since I bought it. Discovered that only 1 rear Fog lamp worked. After some investigation discovered that Passenger side Lamp had no voltage to it then discovered that it had no wiring to it. I assume this is normal but being the sceptic I am I would like to confirm that this is completely normal and that some wise guy selling secon hand Motors has not ripped out the wiring to conceal some other electrical fault. Your advice will be much appreciated. Now to find out why my warning lamp is coing on,

Thanks in advance,

Les

Smart + others :)
ur correct, mercs only have 1 fog lamp. Check all exterior bulbs inc No. plate lamps, if all lit, check for correct wattage.

Some might consider it cheapskate to only have one rear fog but its again its a eurobabble recomendation, only one rear fog on the drivers side this helps avoid confusion with brake lights. If you want two get a LH lamp for a LH drive model.

There can be only one!

Yes, 100% only one fog light is required. So is very possible that your set up is correct.

Shouldn't be a warning light though, so the problem will lie elsewhere

Most warnings only come on when that circuit is being used, ie , a faulty brake light will only show up once you have touched thew brake pedal

Make sure that you have two bulbs per side working at the rear. I think i am right in saying that,l its certainly the case one the 210 e-class.

Hi,
As everyone is saying one fog light on the rear is correct, the warning light for it is in the centre of the main light switch when its pulled out 2 positions with the lights on.
If you wanted to wire up the other side all you have to do is run a cable across, and connect it on the correct pin on the cluster multi plug and put in another lamp.
If you look everything is there for it so they were really tight with the pennys when the 202 was built, 1 metre of cable, and 2 crimps, what would that of cost a company like MB.

bigaston you are missing the point, It is not cheapskate.
The single rear fog lamp is to enable others to know that it is a fog lamp and not brake lights, a scenario that is meant to reduce accidents due to others being confused and slinging their brakes on because they saw TWO bright lights in bad fog.

Adding an extra lamp will cofuse the lamps OK sensing system.

point taken regarding two fogs confusion etc though I don,t nessacarily agree with it as previous cars I have owned had 2 rear fogs, though they were older vehicles than my C230K.
Mine is wired up and i have had no issues with the bulb failure unit. I can only think that the failure unit does,nt monitor the rear fogs.

my LHD 202

also has the 2nd fog added. This hasn't tripped the bulb failure unit. I recall it was really easy job, just the bending over of small bit of metal on the PCB type bulbholder on the offside, to make th the bulbhoder live, insert a bulb, and away we went to getting an MOT cert.

Just a thank you to all you guys who have taken the time to offer your advice. All has been very helpful and very much appreciated. I may wire the other Fog in but it will depend on how much hassle it is to get a Multi-plug pin?socket as there is none in the plug that is there at the moment. Once again thanks guys,

Cheers,

Les
