I see that 15 people have read my message but no one has responded. Perhaps I ought to be more specific. Does four years seem a reasonable length of life for two rear springs?
Has anyone else experienced this problem? What do you think about using non certified Mercedes repair garages?
Mercedes refused my offer to inspect the springs even though my garage said that in their opinion they were clearly faulty and not fit for purpose. Surely, on safety grounds alone they ought to have inspected them especially as I said that I would personally deliver them to wherever they specified. The cost of each spring was over£800 plus fitting charges!

Rear Spring(three)

Thank you very much for your reply. I have a feeling that here are a number of people who have suffered this fault and Mercedes simply do not want to acknowledge the fault. My car had a full service history and I sent photographs of the failed spring to Mercedes. They simply gave me the brush off.

Tel, the front drivers side spring on my S320CDi failed just a few weeks after the 3 year warranty expired. At the time I was driving at about 40 mph on a busy dual carriageway, heard a pop and all sorts of warning messages came up. One of the messages was not to move the car. For safety reasons I had to drive the car for a few hundred yards until I could come off the dual carriageway. As I turned into a side road, I could hear the tire rubbing against the wing. In the process the wing was damaged.
I did take this up with MB as at the time car had full MB history. As expected they did not want to know. Had the strut replaced by independent Mercedes specialist at the about same price you paid.

Its a well known problem and MB dont want to know about it. I was in a taxi last week, a nice Lexus LS430. His previous car was an S class, in three years with the Lexus not one single unscheduled repair, with the S class he was going through €10k a year. Proof that a gas guszzling Lexus is much cheaper to run than a diesel S class. He had a litany of trougble with the S class. And the big problem is that with some cars when you get this happening at least the replacement part is better, not so with MB though, if it goes at 2 years the replacement goes at 4 and 6 years.
