Try inspecting your central locking pump for water ingress at the plugs etc.
its located in the boot on the right hand side behind the panneling if i remember correctly.

Your problem is well weird and i am struggling to come up with any solutions unfortunatly!!!!! sorry

Ah I see. You originally posted in this thread? http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=35569

It sounds suspiciously as if you have some crossed wires or a short somewhere.

As well as the vacuum pump, as mentioned. Check the door and boot switches. Try taping them closed and then check to see what happens.

I can't think why the boot should only open once the interior lights have alomst dimmed down.

as regards the boot opening i have no idea other than have you checked for an auto boot opener lever in the car ? perhaps it's faulty or in some way stuck

as regards the back lights coming on and staying on, i too have seen that in my W202 (1995) however I only see it

* when the kids have not closed a door properly (one of the back doors)

or

* when there's a very bad frost which could cause the switch(s) to freeze/melt/freeze and give an incorrect reading

so, have you checked your door switches (there is more than one per door !)

Many thanks for your comments and suggestions - I am in the process of making my way through them. In the meantime, I am in North Yorkshire. The model concerned is a W202 C180 Sport 1997.
I will be in touch with results.
Regards Geoff

Re Boot lock and rear interior light!!!

Hello Guys and Girls!!! what a day of Mercedes jiggery pokery i have had today. First off i tried all you good folks ideas, wiring, door switches, connecters etc, although interior light stayed on, bummer!!

So went in house had a cuppa (i find this some times works) cleared my thoughts and started again. This time i started with the PSE pump in the boot pulling out the connecters, one at a time and bugger me the last plug i pulled, the light whent out!!! Plugged it back in and on came the light. Could this be somthing to do with it me thinks.

Now on my travels a couple of days ago i came across a guy who has quite a lot of Mercedes spares in a barn (about 120 tonnes he informed me). So i gave him a ring just to sound him out about the problem and tell him what i had found. He informed me that it could be down to the pump as interior lights, alarm, central locking etc all have some control within the pump.
He said he may have one or two kicking around and one could be mine for 75 quid.

Now comming from yorkshire i keep a close hold on the old wallet, but seen as these cost much more than this new from the main dealer, i decided to part company with said fee and give it ago!!

On arrival he asked which model of pump i needed? (you mean theres more than one i asked). Been a kind harted sole he gave me two diferent ones to try. So i parted with 75 said pounds and headed home.

On arrival at home i plugged in the new unit and Hey Presto!! light off. After picking myself up off the floor i tried central locking etc all Fine and Dandy.
Problem Solved.

Sorry for going on a bit, but i just wanted to tell you all thanks ever so much for all your help. And who knows this may help someone else out.
PS Managed to still keep off the tabs, but i came close!!!!

Dont suppose you know where this pump is on W210 E240 1998, I'm also having problems with lights ,locking ,alarms and windows all being intermittent and this sounds like a logical explanation that I need to check out. (If only there were manuals for this)
Thanks
