Hello all,

I have just bought a 2003 240E but I am a bit puzzled over the rear interior lighting. The car appears to have ambient lighting in the front and rear but the rear unit does not light. There are buttons on the rear interior lighting cluster to raise or lower the ambient lighting level but they do nothing. Also the switch on the front interior lighting cluster which is supposed to turn on the main rear roof light does nothing. The rear reading lamps (both left and right) seem to work OK but not the main light or the ambient lighting. I thought perhaps the bulbs may have blown but I can't see how to get the cover off to check. Any thoughts?

When the doors are opened only the front roof light and the foot well lamps come on.

Glad of any help!

Hello James and welcome to the forum, some one will come on with one of these cars, are there any options in the main menu in the instrument cluster.

Hi James
I had the same problem when I bought my E 270 CDI also 2003.
The problem is likely to be a bad connection between the cable harness and the front and rear lights. If you try disconnecting the cable from the lights and reconnecting it again that may cure the problem. If that doesn't work you may need a new harness part no. A 211 540 76 10 costing around £10

Thanks for the advice GT Main Man. I was goiing to try checking he connections/bubs etc on the roof light cluster but I couldn't see how to get the covers off without risking doing some damage. There must be a technique though. Any idea what the secret with this is?

Hi James
Sorry for delayed reply,. The rear roof light comes out of the roof lining as one complete unit ,It is held in by 4 plastic type clips 1 on each corner which clip on to pegs on the roof lining. Use a hook type tool with a 90 bend to pull the light unit out but take care to support it as it can drop out and snap the wiring harness then you will need to replace it . The harness is not so easy to replace as it entails dropping the roof lining at the n/s.
