Just read a post about an E220 where all sorts of problems arose when the battery was changed.

I have a C220 CDI 2001 when I bought it the fuel gauge read three quarters full all of the time.Looking up possible causes on WIS it suggested disconnecting the battery for 15min,I did this by disconnecting the earth lead from on top of the turret when I connected it back up it flashed as if something was switched on.All sorts of things wouldn't work and I had to have a new rear SAM module fitted.

Perhaps Malcolm would know why this would happen.I would have thought if every thing is switched off there should be no problem in removing battery. Is the rear fuse and relay unit live at all times.

I am very wary about disconnecting battery and would wellcome any comments.

Hi John, I am aware of your problem that affects many of our cars, its something that I am working on. there is a way of flashing these things (SAM) I hope to put something up shortly.

Just coming bact to this, these units are live, all of the time, when powering up many thing they can blow up, my thoughts now are for a simple soft start up way of re joining the battery.

I have read quite a few posts on SAM failure and batteries and to be honest the whole lot of them scare the $h!t out of me particularly as it this unit costs so much and seems so easy to damage. Why is it that the battery, a basic yet completely essential component to any car engine can cause so much grief? Why doesnt the manual warn against these problems?
