Has anyone fitted a rear wiper to a saloon Merc? I have just acquired an '88 300D and notice the lack of this item after years of driving hatchbacks/estates. Is there a kit available or does anyone know whether the wiper from another type of vehicle can be used?

In a word - no. Merc saloons do not have rear wipers - come to think of it, aside from a couple of Japanese oddities, no saloons have rear wipers. There was a discussion on this topic a few months ago. My feeling is that you don't need one, primarily for aerodynamic reasons and its only estates that really do, hatchbacks are somewhere in the middle.

I had a Nisan 200sx with one. It's a coupe not a hatchback. Very useful too. Now I get into my W202 and have no idea what's going on behind me for at least 15 mins every morning - IMHO all cars should have them :)

I don't think you'd be behind me for long on a CBR.

I am more concerned about PC plod on one of those big white bikes.

Or anyone right behind me in town - the first 30 mins of most journeys I do are in London traffic and I don't get enough speed to blow standing water off the rear screen.

Call me old fashioned but I like to use all three mirrors.

I have never seen a saloon car with a rear wiper and think it would look silly on that type of car, only my personal opinion,sorry.....

if it gets bad and you forget to wipe it before you go, put your heated window on. it will help a bit...

Have you ever heard of RainX ?

The RainX works better on the rear windows than the front. After you put all that work in polishing up the front screen you are lothed to use the wipers. The rear screen doesn't get dirty so you don't have to RainX it very often.

Actually this miracle product is pretty useful in genrally improving visablity on old front screens as it seems to nullify all the micro scratches if you polish it enough.

Shaggy,

You know I might just give that a go - unless it's raining of course in which case I won't as (a) I won't want to get wet (b) the window will get covered again anyway.

I guess all this thread is telling me is that prior to buying my 202 I always had a coupe or hatchback with a rear window wiper. And I miss having one
