Getting more annoyed at the fact of having no sounds in the rear of the car, me and a mate decided to fit some 6x9's on the rear shelf of the 190.

Having fitted many a speaker in Fords and Vauxhalls, i was socked and stunned at how much of the car i had to remove to run the wires properly, the passenger seat, rear seat, carpet, and the 12 layers of soundproofing between the road and my feet!

Its was a learning curve to the build quality of Mercs, i was further amazed how well put together they are, and the attention to detail, especially in an older one like mine. The way that the back seat unclips and is easily removed, and how the floor panels unclip to reveal wiring looms.

It really does make cars like Sierra's and Cavaliers look like they have been thrown together in comparison.

Just thought i would share that with you all!!!

I have all this to come yet...  Hopefully this week I will find out if my power/heated two-tone leather seats are available.  If they are, I have a lot of messing around with cables to do.  If they tell me they have a power rear blind and power folding door mirrors then it'll be a LOT of cabling to sort out  .

The rear quarter trim panels on a 220CE are a bit of an arse though, the way the tops clip to the car.

(Just had the windows tinted!!!!)

Interesting under the back seat of a 190....sound proofing layer, with a marked resemblence to a 7.5 tog duvet.

Ive also found out where the vacum pumps is for the door locks......nestling in its little foam case!

Matt,

I have to fit My 6*9's next weekend, but I have to pay someone to cut  out the holes in the rear shelf. I really don't wanna cut this car, but I can see no other way to getting these deep infinities in there.

I might cry.

How have you got yours in?

Is it a good idea to cut the car?? I was going to do that but I wasn't sure if it would affect the rigidity of the car so decided aganist it, I had to fit some tinny 10cm speakers. And because of the petrol tank, a simple sub or bass tube set up will not do, apparently you need at least two subs unless you somehow put a sub where the first aid box is. Has anyone ever done this??

Going back to the cutting, when I went to a hifi shop (after i had already fit the speakers), they said it was ok to cut the metal but I wasn't sure if he was just after my money or not. I was quoted £50 labour to get some 6x9's fitted.

Has anyone ever cut the metal under the shelf? Is it ok to do it?

i have fitted some 6" speakers in the back of my shelf and there is no need to cut the metal shelf as there are some holes already there for the rear speakers.

all you need to do is remove the rear seats and the unscrew 2 bolts holding the carpet parcel shelf. The whole shelf should slide out and if you turn it upside down, you will see that mercedes has already marked out where the speaker holes should be, so you just draw round your own speaker size close to their markings. To cut the holes out of the carpet shelf you just drill a small hole and insert a jig saw to cut the hole out.

I also just found out that "Audio Acoustics" do an MDF parcel shelf for My 190. Apparently the current "metal" rear shelf just unscrews, and the new one can be fitted. £60 for the parcel shelf, and however much those audion Bass Monkies are gonna charge you for fitting.

If music be the food of love.....
