I apologise if this question is a bit daft but I know nothing about car stereos ! Does anyone know if the grilles in the rear doors of a W124 estate are for speakers ? If so what size should they be? I know the front ones need the rainbow speakers and they just drop in. There is a mention on their website of rear speakers for the saloon which I assume sit in the rear parcel shelf but no mention of the estate.

Any guidance appreciated !! ;)

Rear speakers

The grilles in the armrests are for speakers. They're optional and many cars have holes cut in the door card to fit speakers. It's quite a small hole - I suspect it's for an 11 cm speaker like the fronts

If you've got the grilles you should have the wiring in place already which will make life easier. It went via a fader on the centre console on early cars but this may disappear on later one - I don't recall seeing a fader on more recent cars

Frankly I wouldn't bother - rear speakers don't add much to the sound in the front

Rear door speakers are handy if you want to listen to music outside the car, you can open the doors and the boot and annoy the neihbours.

Does anybody the impedance of the front speakers?

I had rear door speakers already fitted when I got the car. When I use the fade, the rear speakers (8 ohm) don't seem as loud as the front speakers.

The Speakers on my 124 TE were 4ohms, using 8 ohms will halve the output. The length of the thin cables to the rear does not help the situation. later cars use 1 ohm with the start of the Audio 10 & 20.
