Hello,

I do not know if this is a problem or a characteristic of the car but would welcome comment. I have had a E220 for a few months and when driving over a manhole cover, which is not flush with the road, or any other road defect etc I detect a short shake from the back end. I have waited until I had the car serviced and MoT,d last week expecting maybe bushes or shocks would need replacing, but no work was necessary. The car runs like a dream in all other conditions. Any comments appreciated

Mercedes saloons have a very rigid body shell and relatively stiff suspension. Where other lesser cars bodies flex quite a lot over bumps and absorb some road shocks by slight deformation,Mercs dont. This is most marked over rutted surfaces where there is a diagonal twist to the chassis e.g. nearside front and offside rear loaded/unloaded at the same time. Provided your suspension and rear subframe bushes check out,I dont think you have anything to worry about.

W124 Suspension Shakes

Interested to hear of Jim's worries when hitting significant road bumps. I had the same worries until the checks turned out ok.

Thanks Graeme on your diagnosis; quite re-assuring really !
