Hi
Apologies is this gets asked every month.
My 2014 E350 estate 46,000 miles just failed its MOT on rear tyres. Fitted new about 16,000 miles ago. The inside edge was completely removed almost to threads.
The garage said it'll be rear tracking, so I said go ahead and adjust it. They came back to me saying the rear control arms need replacing! I was surprised at 40,000 miles. Is this normal or is there a fix, or is 16,000 about what people get?
I drive like an old man by the way.
Thanks
Rob

Probably time to go to your local Hunter 4 wheel alignment outfit they will adjust the rear tracking for you - unless of course the garage are right and the rear control arms do need replacing - seems odd at 40k miles though

The tyres tend to wear on inner edges if you have a staggered wheel set up with wider rims at back. Again get the tracking set up by someone who knows what they are doing after further checking if any wear in rear suspension.

Sounds like a job for a competent Independent Specialist. 16,000 miles with torque and power of 350 does not seem overly bad, depends on your right foot!

The rear angle can also be out if the rear ride hight is incorrect, mines running about 5-8mm too high at the moment and I’m wearing the inside edges at about 15k miles,

Given the state of the roads, I make it a habit of getting my car wheels aligned every year when driving back from service. Also check that they are wearing evenly periodicly.

How come I get so much more out of my rear than those here? Used to happily get 25k out of a set on the 211

I have over 17,000 on the rear tyres on my E220 estate and they are still only about half worn !!

Do you check the tyre pressure regularly?

Also, do you often have heavy loads in the rear?

Yep, checked fairly regularly, I can always feel when they aren’t quite right. As for heavy loads, I do carry things fairly often, not all the time mind but certainly enough that it should make a bit of difference

You weren't the target audience. You're getting a reasonable/excellent 25,000 miles from your rear tyres.

I was more focused towards the 16,000 miles from a set people.
The F1 guys are delighted to get 50 miles from a set of tyres, so maybe 16,000 miles could be considered to be phenomenal !!!

I had a bit of a cunumdrum couple of days ago folks, had to pop to Worthing, checked the tyre pressures as i normally do, found O/S/R down to 12psi from 32? Hmmm pumped it up and now it seems ok? So either someone let it down or valve has a fault? Checked tyre all over and no sign of punture or other damage?...as Toyah Wilcox once sang.....Its a Mystery...its a mystery????
Hehe!! :)

a customer of mine has a CLS that was also wearing the inside edge off its tyres too early , this issue was found while replacing rear airbags , hunter alignment found the car was set up correctly but since the new bags were fitted the car seems to sit higher and squarer on its tyres at the back so bare this in mind if nothing can be found wrong with the alignment
