Hi all, this is my first response to the forum - its a great read - please bear with my lack of computer skills! I have a 2002 CDI manual coupe, just passed the 100,000 mile mark (I do around 30k/year) - mainly I'm very pleased but the rear tyre wear is at best 20k on Continentals, with the last ones- Bridgestones - only 18k. I travel mainly motorway, even though I live 50 miles away from it, and I'm not hot on the throttle pedal. I feel I should be getting more mileage.
So my question - what make of tyre gives best value? Its a pity the tyre manufacturers give no 'hardness' rating.

I'm sure there is a hardness rating for all tyres.
Usually the tyre will have TREADWARE with a rating, like A, B or C next to it.
A google search should find the correct explanations.

Bob - mine's a c220cdi saloon so I guess fairly comparable - had michelin pilot primacy fitted to the rears 20,500 miles ago and I've just measured them - 3.5mm on nearside & 4mm on offside (not sure why????) - so they've probably got a few thousand in them before they get down to sensible (rather than legal) change time - not overly convinced by their wet weather grip though

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I pretty well only use my car on the motorway too, and I just managed to get to 20K on the originally fitted Bridgestone Turanza's.

I've had Michelin Primacy HP's (the HP is a fairly new version, which is marketed as being longer lasting than before) and after 10K miles they look hardly worn.

BMW 520d SE F10, formerly c220cdi estate (for 12.5 years and 345k miles), before that w124 and w210
Rear tyre wear on W203

I have a 2002 c220cdi estate, 120K miles, which I have had from new.

Came with Pirelli tyes, subsequently Dunlop, Firestone and GoodYear. Mixed driving, mainly motorway for the first 80K miles, mainly A roads next 40K miles.

I have been getting 25K miles from front tyres and 20K from rear tyres, consistently, irrespective of the type of miles and make of tyres.

It is a heavy car with lots of torque. I would suggest 20K from the rear tyres is about what you can expect. I thought about Michelins, but given the price difference, I would need over 30K from the rear tyres to make it cost-effective.

Thanks all for the replies and especially Helen for the mine of info! It looks as though I will be getting Michelin Primacy's on the basis of what I have read - quite fancy getting twice the mileage - sure they aren't twice the cost. I forgot to say the tyres are 225x45x17's, but I suppose that's fairly standard for the Evo Sports Coupe. I'll be increasing the pressures slightly as well from your experiences - mine have always been the standard 30 front and 33 rear. - Bob
