What are the best tyres to fit to my C200k??.... in terms of both general wear and road noise?.

The car mileage is 34,000 and I require a 3rd set of 245/40x17 on the rear. I have only used the Michelin Pilot Sports, which we on the car when I purchased it. I was told by a Mercedes mechanic to fit Continentals, as he said they were quieter in use, and wear better.

I am light footed, despite getting just 15,000mls on a set of rears, and regularly see over 41 mpg (cruise control at the legal limit on the motorway) and best of an indicated 42.4mpg a couple of weeks ago!.

I may fit another set of Michelins, as I can get them at a reasonable price from Costco...but would appreciate anybody views on the difference between the top tyre brands and which are the most quiet in use.

Regards, Paul

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I recently put Michelin Primacy HP's (HP is the newer, longer life version of Primacy) on the rear of my C270CDi.
I really only use the car for motorway cruising and after 10K miles the tyres still look pretty new.
Not sure about quietness in absolute terms, but they're certainly quieter and more comfortable (softer riding) than the Bridgestone Turanza ER30's that the car came with.

I managed 15K from my original set of rear Contis (245/40 17s). I replaced them with Kumho KU19s which perform extremely well however I will be lucky to get 12K miles from them. That said they are 2/3rds the cost of Michelins / Contis so the cost per mile overall is about the same.

The Federals that jberks is running on his E are coming in at £55 from MyTyres so I might be tempted to give these a shot next time.

15K doesn't sound bad to me. My wife can only get 8000 out of the Michelin Pilot Sports on the back of my C32.

Might have a heavy right foot though.......

One week after fitting Avon ZZ3s to my E320CDI I can't praise them enough - I have never had such a quiet tyre. The fuel economy seems unaffected, and I am still getting 41+ MPG on long runs

I have a C220 Sport coupe (evo panoramic with 225-45 17's) and found that, Michelin Sport pilots last about 11/12k Premacy's about 12/13k. I was reccomended Pirrelli P zero Rosso Asymetricos, these have been on about 8k and are showing very little wear, and are very quite on motorways and handle very well (on rears) .The fronts (still sport pilots but will replace with P zeros when due!) last very well, 20+k exept for rounding off the corners which I am told is normal for these cars as the power steering causes this! I was told to run the front 2/3 psi higher than reccommended and this will prevent a lot of the edge wear.

Thanks.

Dear All,

Thanks for the information which is very helpful.. I check my tyre pressures evey week...might try Silver-Racers suggestion, and increase the front tyres pressure by 2-3psi to reduce edge wear. Did have bad edge wear on my front tyres and the feeling of constantly pulling to the left...tracking/camber etc..checked by Merc and was within correct limits.

Anyone run on "Falkens" a trye outlet here in Bury St Edmunds sells these tyres very cheaply (which I guess they are..about half the price of Michelins).

Cheers Paul

I keep fancying a change of rubber to something more sexy than Michelin Primacy on my CLK 270 CDI, but having covered 19,500 miles, the backs have still got another 6000 miles or so to go and the fronts another 8000 miles or so. What to do? Change to Continental or Pirelli Rosso? Certainly I will stay in the premium tyre league to keep away from tyre fitting machines as long as possible. Dilema!

Paulopt,

The Conti SpCon2's on my C180 managed 12k on the rear and not a lot more on the front. It's a 180 auto .... not much boy racer stuff is able to go on in this car, yet the roads of London have eaten these tyres.

In the dry, they're fine, but on a wet motorway they don't inspire any confidence at all when breaking from 85mph. Having gone through new sets on the front and back, I am definately switching to Michelin Pilot Exaltos next time for their wet weather performance (check out www.tirerack.com and www.tyretest.com for all sorts of user survey results).

The other thing to mention about the Conti's is the pronounced rumbling noise that you get when the tread depth gets to about 4mm .... annoying.

Good luck in the search. Post back up what you end up choosing.

Hi Paul

I favour Toyo Proxes. They're hard wearing, good grippers and, above all, cheaper than the standard fitment. I have found them to be much quieter than Continentals over must surfaces: they don't rumble. A set will generally last about 2 years or 18,000 - 20,000 miles but it all depends on your right foot. I paid GBP75.00 each, including fitting about 2 years ago and replacement is now iminent.

My C230K is capable of quite hard acceleration but I've never found it spinning its rear wheels, it's not that kind of car. Consequently I get a reasonable mileage from them. Driven carefully I could perhaps add another 5,000 - 10,000 miles to their life. My C230K is an automatic.

REGARDS

Phil
