when switching on the ignition in my 200TE I can hear a hissing noise noise outside the car comming from the drivers side rear wheel it's not the tyre as it only happens when the ignition is on, could it be a brake sensor loose ???.

Fuel pump?

Although centrally mounted, does it sound the same from the nearside?

Wouldn't describe mine as a hiss though!

Hissing noise as you call it - if it stops within 10 secs or so -tis fuel pumps and normal.

Test by standing outside car and getting someone else to turn to ign on for you.
