Rear window defroster

Hi all,

The rear window de-froster is not working on my '84 500SEC. When you hold the switch down it lights up but when you release it goes off again. Any suggestions much appreciated?

Also none of the dash or console lights when headlights are switched on. Checked all fuses etc. and all seems ok. Just took ownership of car. Think the seller changed the radio before he gave it to me. Would this have anything to do with it?

There is a separate relay for the heated window it should be self latching and the relay is the timer.

The car radio shares it feed with the cigar lighter, the last owner has probably cut the lighting wire to join up the radio illumination.
