I have noticed water seepage in the parcel shelf of my 1983 500SEC. The rear window seal has been alowing water in.
I have fixed this problem like this.
1. Remove the siler metal trim from the rubber, being careful not to bend it.
2. Lifting the inside lip of the rubber where it meets the glass and getting the mud and water out with a cloth, making sure that I got it dry inside. The seal is so slack I could get the cloth right round the edge of the glass.
3. I chose black silicone sealant in a cartridge with a skeleton gun so i could press the end right in as I applied it. I ran in a good size bead of sealant around the sides and the bottom of the glass.
4. As i moved on the rubber lip naturally folded back sqeezing some of the sealant out. When i had finished I lightly ran my finger along the rubber alowing it to re-seat itself.
5. I took a pointy bit of wood from a nearby skip and ran it around pushing the sealant leaving a clear line about 1mm between sealant excess and rubber
6. The next day I skimmed the excess off with a razorblade.
Job done. I think this will be a great seal. It cost me £7.50
I would say this will only work if you catch it early
