Rear window wiper fault

Rear window wiper on my '98 202 estate has been working fine with an approx 10 second delay between wipes. But this morning it was wiping every 60 seconds or so and didn't automatically wipe when I switched on the windscreen wipers. It wouldn't wipe immediately when the dash button was pressed either.

Any ideas as to the problem?
