E300 Diesel...now with less dents!
My Dad recently purchased a very nice 230ce coupe which unfortunately leaks like a sieve in the wet....Then freezes solid in the mornings.

One of the major culprits as far as water ingress goes is the rear windscreen seal. Having looked around the internet I've managed to find somewhere that sells the seal for £50, not bad.

However fitting it is something else, Dad feels that the job is outside his abilities so can anyone suggest somewhere near to Birmingham (UK) that can do a good job on his pride and joy?

Thanks in advance

Just call any windscreen glass people, they do it all day long,,it is a skilled job, one problem on the coupes is the metal rusting under the seal

As malcolm says, it will no doubt have rusted underneath. If it were mine, I'd get a bodyshop to sort it. They can get the mobile glass people out to remove the glass, they can then repair the bodywork before the glass people come back and refit. After all, no point putting a £50 seal over rotten metal and if you do find the corosion once the glass is removed, you're stuck out and about with no rear windscreen.

Sound advice, thanks

Can any one recommend a particular garage near Birmingham?

Tried Andy Gales and was seriously disappointed in their level of service when they looked at my E300. (Quoted £300 to replace the rear brakes and £1500 to replace the NSR door or offered my mother £300 for the car "to take it off her hands and save her the trouble")

You can bodge a repair using silicone sealant - will reduce the water leak until you get a garage to do a proper repair.

Hi All
This is the Dad with the sieve.
I have taken the rear parcel shelf out and there is no rust around the lower screen. It looks like new.

I have another leak(s) that is getting through the firewall and ending up in the rear footwells.
I have cleaned the drains but it still getting in.
Will have to investigate further.

regards
paul

Have poured water into the partially opened sunroof tray.
Water is escaping out of the wheelarches.

I have removed the carpets and I can see water coming through the fire wall.
Will have to remove the trim under the glove box to find if there are any holes.
The spring anchors look solid but I suppose it only needs a small crack.

Have you cleared out the drains in the bonnet spring cavities?

Cavities are clear but water is probably getting through a crack in the bulkhead. I have leaks both sides.
I have had to remove all carpets and lower trim.
But do not seem to have time to investigate fully.
I get the inner glass covered in water or frost, so it is not much fun at the moment.

err....umm....err....nope - sorry, not a clue. Maybe he's suggesting you shout at it.
All I can say is that I tried that technique on my old ford escort. It didn't seem to help ;-)

Ahhhh, I think it refers to Ray Mears; but he has missed a few key strokes.

I think he means:

"a good way to find leaks is use talc on the floor then hose the car & look for the wet trail on the talc (i.e. talcum powder)"

I myself have never tried talking to a car, but I had a Morris Marina thirty years ago, so I have to admit to kicking it a few times (OK I admit it, lots of times!).

I think that with those you have to thrash the bonnet with a branch from a tree and shout at it,, it worked for Basil Faulty
