Reason I bought a MB

One of the reasons I bought a MB was that my Mazda MX-5 was so damn loud on the motorway (small car, big engine, rag top). I recently got to try my SLK on a trip from Manchester to St Andrews, and WOW am I impressed!

It felt like the fastest 5 hour journey I have ever done, and I don't mean mph. The M6 north is quiet anyway, so with cruise control on a steady 80 the miles drifted by and it was almost a surprise to arrive. Having a bit more power under one's foot was great too - even for a relatively small engined MB, going from 80 upwards was effortless for overtaking.

The bad news: (1) Scotlands has lots of speed cameras - I'm crossing my fingers that I don't get anything nasty in the post, (2) my car only had 24k on the clock, so I added 4% to the odometer in one trip!

All in all, absolutely well pleased!! :D

PS. Averaged 30 mpg on the way too with Shell Optimax, the best efficiency so far.

Gott say the SLK is a lovely car. If I didn't have to seat 4 most of the time it would be right up there on my shopping list. My neighbour has an MX-5 and also complains about a lack of refinement. He also has an RX-8 which he loves except for its exceptional oil thirst.

What colour is your SLK?

Just to resolve a Opimax often asked qustion, yesterday in my SL500 I did a 100mile run and used Tesco 95 ron all the way there and it returned 25.8 mpg. I filled up with optimax for the journey home where it returnd 25.9mpg

I had a R171 SLK for a couple of years and loved it. However, to satisfy a yearning I had for years, I got a new MX5 ZSport. Great little car but it just didn't have the sophistication of a MB. So I sold it after 6 months, at a big loss :( , and am now really happy with my W209 CLK Cabriolet. More flexibility than a SLK.

@Qcut: Yes I went for the default in the end, although I did consider the champagne (?) colour.

@television: Not that I want to disagree with someone with 21,085 posts, however from what I've read here the switch to Super increases your mpg a little each time (where it stops is a different question however). If you fill up with Optimax again, see what you get.

I always got better MPG and performance from Optimax in the 3.6 911.

And because there was a Shell station across the road from where I was working the 911 got Optimax all the time and yes the 911 got better because it ran on Optimax, I will and would never put supermarket fuel in any of our 4 Mercedes. I used to be a manager for Tesco!!!!!

yeah electric seats are important, but ONLY with a memory function! heated seats are important for me too - I hate a cold bottom on a winter's morning ;)

Please excuse my ignorance but I find it hard to believe that electric seats can be that important to someone as an option, surely it is much quicker and easier to adjust manually? I can see a case for it if you have a memory function and you swap drivers often but otherwise it is probably the least desirable of options (just ahead of rain sensing wipers: how lazy do you have to be!)

Nothing to do with being lazy, why have a dog & bark? Electric memory seats mean that you don't have to spend ages getting your seating position back after partner/garage has driven. Auto wipers mean that you don't have to fiddle with the intermittent setting or keep switching them on & off all the time.

I'll excuse your ignorance this time:D, rain sensing wipers are now a must have for any of my future cars after having them for the first time in the CLK.

Manual seats always seem too near the steering wheel, but move them one position back and they are too far away. Electric seats can be nudged to the exact position for me as they are not tied to notches cut out of the seat frame but infinitly variable in position.

Ok I concede that the ability to change the seat settings in finely graded steps could be a boon - this was something that I had not thought of.

In my defense I have driven a 6 year old Peugeot 106 for the last 2 years - it has electric windows and ... thats it! to be honest I was quite charmed by the fact that it had nothing in the way of options - in fact I would have preferred to have windy up windows as the electric windows seemed to spoil the bare bones effect that i liked so much - 950kg with a full tank, structural integrity of a pepsi can, every journey an adventure and a dice with death - loved it!

It will be difficult to adjust to the new C 220 avantgarde I think!

leccy memory seats are nice but I could live without them, especially since on at least 2 occasions I've got in after someone else has driven it to find they'd fiddled and reset the damn thing. Also, occasionally the parking mirror doesn't return so its handy for that too, though without memory it wouldn't drop in the first place so I suppose its irrelevant.

The rain sensor in the other hand. Wouldn't be without it. They way it constantly varies the speed of the wipers - with drizzle, rain, spray they're always on the right setting.

I like driving a tin can on the odd occasion. They're never as awful as I expect, but get back into the merc and .....

Going back to the original post - for me, having that 3-pointed gun sight at the end of the bonnet gives me a real sense of well-being when I'm driving. That probably sounds a bit sad but if you put time and money into your choice of car it has to have something special about it.
