I don't want to disallusion you but I am so disgusted with the so-called classic car industry in England that I have just had my 1970 280 SL shipped to Phuket Thailand where I have a winter home and have just given a free holiday to a great German engineer (Richard Ott) in exchange for him rebuilding my engine and generally teaching me how to do the things that will need doing in the long term.

Without exception they are all rip off artists and shysters in England in my experience.

Live in Kingston myself.

Took mine last time to SS Motors in Weybridge (01932 821555), who came highly recommended via the www.******************.co.uk forum.

Seemed very good and knew their stuff. Think labour charge was £35 p/h + vat.

european mechanics

Has anyone had any experience of taking their cars over to continental or eastern europe for engine or transmission overhauls?

Given the number of w124s and later models they use as taxis there must be some really good mechanics out there and then there's the euro exchange rate as well.

Of the 5 so-called experts I used within the SE. since Septemebr, SS were the only ones to get my car running consistantly, but they failed to notice 3 x different sets of spark plugs in my six cylinder engine or the fact that there was a sticking valve which was a major contributor to the oil consumption problem I brought to their attention. They didn't know either how to de-regulate my car from California emission standards which was also a major problem in other areas.

POLAND is the place to be apparently. I am learning almost daily that the Poles are being praised for their mechanical and restoration skills by the Germans of all people.
The British "specialist" dealers have cottoned on to this but don't expect them to give up any useful information as it clearly is not in their interests to promote foreigners.
