I've recently bought a 1998 C180 in completely standard trim which needs a new set of tyres. I rarely drive above 70mph and most of my driving is done on A roads, with a few dual-carriageway runs per month.

Looking through previous threads in the forum about tyre recommendations, they seem to be discussing more sportier tyres than I would need.

Based on my more mundane style of driving, can anyone recommend a decent set of rubber that lasts, is quiet and suitable for summer and winter conditions?

I'll probably order the tyres from http://www.mytyres.co.uk/ and get them fitted locally.

All advice gratefully received,

Thanks,
moleboy

Unless you are going rallying or are a really aggressive driver, I can't see what difference it will make. I've had Pirelli, Contis, Dunlop and Vredesteins and quite honestly I can't tell the difference to any real degree. Just see what they have a deal on and check the 'review' section to see if there is any major problem with that particular tyre. All have to pass gov't standards so any are ok really.

moleboy,

Through the years I have tried a plethora of tyres for all sorts of use: long lasting general motoring, sporty road use, off-road use and competition and I am a great believer in horses for courses. My current favourites are Goodyear and Michelin, which have always given me very good mileage as well as consistant performance no matter which category I use them in (except off-road). Irrespective of the price I would stay with one of the main stream providers especially, for mileage as my experience is that the others tend to forsake mileage for grip in order to stay with the best and those that sell high mileage tyres do so forsaking grip.

First, establish the tyre size and speed rating - remember although you may not do more than 70mph, merc will have selected the tyre for ALL its performance characteristics, not just speed. Select the type of tyre you need from your selection of manufacturers and then test the prices out. The extra paid for quality rubber is usually worth it in mileage terms. Its almost worth going for the most expensive of your selected tyre type as you won't be disappointed - you get what you pay for.

Personally, I stay away from Pirelli or Continental (same company and tyre compounds) because of the wear rate although in all honesty the other performance factors are equal to the best.

Good hunting

Thanks for the guidance. At present I have:

Front: 1 x Michelin Energy XH1 195/65 R15 91H, 1 x Mega 195/65 R15 91H
Rear: 2 x Michelin Energy XH1 195/65 R15 91H tyres

I need to replace the front 2 tyres (the rears have plenty of tread left).

It looks as if the XH1 range has been replaced with the E3A range - anyone have these on their C180?

Should I stick with Michelins on the front, or is it OK to mix brands?

I thought replacing tyres would be an easy exercise

Moleboy,

i would definitely stay with the Michelins not only from what I've said previously but also because you will have the best consistent performance/behaviour by keeping the same construction, compounds all round.

Hi moleboy

I've switched from the usual options to Toyo Proxes T1R. I took the advice of my local tyre specialist whom I've known for almost 30 years. His advice has always proved sound.

So far I can't complain. They are quieter than my former Continentals. They have superior grip and have transformed the car's handling. I have found I need less braking effort, presummably because of better grip. Above all, they're cheaper than their European equivalents. They are reported to be harder wearing but I won't know that for a year, or two.

REGARDS Phil

Just had a new set of Michelin Primacy fitted last weekon my C250TD Sport, after Conti Sports. Big improvement, ride more compliant and seem to be much quieter - also promised more mileage.
